Climate & Weather

Mexico enjoys a variety of climates, ranging from temperate to tropical weather. There are two main seasons: the dry season lasting from December to April, and the rainy season from May to October.

The sun-kissed Yucatán peninsula experiences some of Mexico’s highest temperatures. Cancún’s hottest month is typically May, averaging around 30ā„ƒ compared to its coolest month, January, with an average of 26ā„ƒ. Because of the higher altitude, Mexico City and inland areas are generally cooler than the coast.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to plan trips to Mexico comes down to preference. December to April is the most popular time to go as this is the dry season, making it a perfect choice for a winter sun or spring break getaway. May to June is a fantastic option for travellers on a budget who are looking to enjoy the hot weather.

May to November marks Mexico’s rainy season. This is an incredible time of year for surfing, wildlife watching and all-around lush scenery. The start of November is one of the best times to visit Oaxaca or Mexico City to experience The Day of the Dead celebrations in all their glory.

Customs & Culture

Mexico is an exciting destination to explore, as it is home to a diverse mix of different cultural influences, including Indigenous and Spanish traditions. Festivals such as Day of the Dead are unique to Mexico and world-famous for their colourful celebrations. Christianity is the main religion in Mexico.

As Spanish is the main language in Mexico, a little bit goes a long way (even though many people speak English). Punctuality is more relaxed here compared to the UK, so travellers are encouraged to go with the flow. Tipping is customary in Mexico, and works similarly to the USA.

We recommend staying up to date with FCDO advice before you go travelling, as entry requirements and visa rules can be subject to change. This includes any countries you may transit as part of your journey.
