Day in The Life
As an Au Pair, you will work a maximum of 45 hours per week, with defined, contractual childcare duties and working hours. You will have at least 1.5 days off per week, one completely free weekend each month and two weeks (10 working days) of paid holiday.
Our host families are carefully selected with thorough background checks and in-home interviews. While every Au Pair's role may look slightly different, below is a taster of what your typical day-to-day life could look like!
- Morning routine: Wake up the children and help them get ready for the day.
- Meal preparation: Prepare breakfast, meals and snacks for the children.
- Drive: Pack up bags and drop off the children at school.
- Free time: While the children are at school, enjoy some free time to go to the gym or do some yoga.
- Education credits: Attend an academic class of your choice for one hour per week - English, photography, US culture or marketing are just some of the classes that are available!
- Laundry & tidying: Clean the children's bedrooms and play areas. Wash and fold laundry for the children.
- Afternoon activities: Play with the children. Help with their homework. Take them to the park or drive them to afterschool activities.
- Dinner with family: Enjoy dinner with your host family and assist with the younger children.
- Bedtime routine: Help get the children ready for bed.
Au Pair Support & Socials
From the moment you arrive at your host family's home, you will also meet your local Area Director. Their role is to support both you and your host family during your entire stay as a first point of contact. They will answer any questions about travel and official documents and provide you with information on your new city and the local universities for classes. Alongside this, their role is also to coordinate exciting monthly socials so you can meet more Au Pairs in the area!
Some of AuPairCare's past social events have included Friendsgiving, volunteering at the NYC marathon, participating in sporting events, going for group hikes and barbecues!
These socials are a chance for you to explore the local area and make new friends for life. This programme attracts travellers from all over the world, so it's the perfect opportunity to meet people from different countries and grow a global network!
Au Pair Educational Classes
As an official cultural exchange programme, part of your visa requirement is to complete educational classes at a recognised US educational institution. This is around one hour of classes per week. 60 hours of education, or 6 credits, is the visa requirement.
During your first meeting with your local coordinator, you will be shown a list of the courses available. There will be a wide range of different subjects on offer, from U.S. culture to photography, English and marketing!
You will receive USD $500 to go towards these classes, which will either cover the full cost or the partial cost depending on your chosen course. You may need to top up on the cost of these classes, but your contribution should not typically exceed an additional USD $200.
You've finished your Au Pair placement! What now?
After successfully completing your Au Pair programme, your J1 visa grants you 30 days to go travelling around America! Age & Eligibility:
Who is eligible to be an Au Pair in the USA?
You are eligible to become an Au Pair in the USA, if you meet the following criteria set by the U.S Department of State:
- Aged 18 to 26 (at the time of travel)
- British passport holder
- Hold a full driving licence
- Can provide two references for non-family related childcare and one personal non-family related reference. You will need at least 300 hours of childcare experience. To care for under 2 year olds, at least 200 of those hours must be with under 2 year olds
- Available for a full 12 months period
- Be in good health and a non-smoker
- Have not participated in an Au Pair programme in the USA within the last two years
- Have passed your secondary school exams (GCSEs or equivalent)
- Can get a recent, enhanced DBS check in advance of travel which must be clear.
Application Process
After placing your deposit for just £99, the application process starts from there. You will be set up with an online application portal, and you will need to submit two childcare references, one character reference and a medical form. If your application and references are approved then an interview will be set up with our Au Pair Coordinator at our Tunbridge Wells office.
You will be required to undergo a DBS check for this particular programme, and we can help you get started with this. Please read on for further details.
After your interview, it is the individual’s responsibility to create an online profile, complete the virtual training and to use the matchmaking service, where you can connect with host families online.
Once a match is secured, you will then pay the remaining programme cost. The next step is securing a J1 visa. Please see visa instructions below.
Visa
Once you have been matched with your American host family we will assist you with applying for your J1 Exchange Visitor Visa. Our partner company in the USA will issue your visa invitation letter. This allows you to make an appointment at the US embassy. You will attend your appointment at the embassy, and then your passport will be sent back to you with your J1 visa 5 working days later. Included in your programme is the SEVIS fee for your visa but the embassy will ask you to pay for an MRV Fee, which is approximately USD $185 (£150).
We will provide you with comprehensive instructions and offer you guidance throughout this process.
DBS Police Record Check
On this particular programme, as you’ll be working with children you’ll need to undergo an enhanced DBS (previously CRB) check. We will help you to do this. There is an additional cost for the DBS check, please speak to your travel advisor at the time of booking. The DBS application is done online, and you will need to get your ID documents verified at a local Post Office. We’ll provide you with more details, but it’s really simple and easy to do.
